Future
Programs
The Centre’s anticipated
plans are to increase the number of children to at least one hundred, to
initiate a Family Support Service to teach pregnant women techniques of
health care, and to actively work for legislative action on behalf
of the mentally handicapped. Under the Family Support Service,
the Centre personnel will visit homes of the mentally disabled and educate
parents and siblings on the nature and treatment/training of such children
at home, sort of family-based delivery. Teaching pregnant women on the
techniques of proper reproductive health care, thereby safeguarding against
potential for the birth of a mentally handicapped child will be another
part of the Service. To augment these attempts, the
magazine
Punerjeni can create public awareness
of the problems of the disabled, and developments in other parts of the
world; this periodical will also bring the families of disabled children
together and make the parents partners in education. The Centre has
plans to take lead in achieving Legislative Action on behalf of the mentally
disabled, to fight for their rights as other individuals in the society.
Another major ambitious project under serious consideration is the establish-ment
of a Residential Program.
Exchange Program
Janey
Centre proposes an Exchange Program with foreign universities
which has Special Education and related programs like Speech Therapy, Vocational
Education, Physical Therapy, Special Education etc. The proposal
is for an internship when the students before graduation, at their own
expense, will undergo six months at Janey Centre.
Present
/ Future Needs
The Centre’s present pressing
needs are: funds for operating expenses, an inverter (electricity back-up),
a UPS for the computer, a vehicle for the Early-Intervention Program, a
spiral stair case, recreational items like slides, swings and see-saws,
a bus shed, P. A. system, renovation of the school building, -funding for
the Residential Program when started, and more. Besides Fr. Varghese’s
own funds, his Kerala friends in the United States have been financially
supporting the Centre so far; that support has naturally been slowly eroding
with Fr. Varghese away in Kerala. Governments of Kerala and India
have not provided any financial help yet. Donations are tax exempt
both in the United States and India.
